AN ASSESSMENT OF COMMUNITY BASED RADIO PRACTICE IN BAUCHI STATE: CHALLENGES AND IMPLICATIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN RURAL NIGERIA

ISAH YAHAYA ALIYU ABDULKADIR, ALIYU SAMBO, BELLO IBRAHIM HALILU

Department of Mass Communication, Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Bauchi State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The Bauchi State government in North Eastern Nigeria has established and been maintaining the largest radio network in the country with eleven affiliate FM stations across the state under the mother station, Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC). Almost three years on with the establishment of what is preferably termed in academic circle as Community Based Radio, this paper presents findings of an audience assessment study into the performance of the Bununu Community Based Radio station. The study was conducted within the framework of Development Media Theory, and adopted case study design to analyse broadcast schedule, interview the station manager and administered structured questionnaire to clustered sample of 100 respondents among the Bununu community. The study found that, although not a full community medium, the community based radio initiative of the government has been doing adequately well in addressing community issues; the people’s rating of the station has been equally fairly good. However, it was obvious that cost of running the stations is becoming heavy on government; and although there are avenues created in the broadcast schedule for community participation, mostly in presentation, listeners rarely participate in phone-ins or text-ins, which could be attributed to either their non involvement in initiating and packaging of programmes, or the level of poverty and illiteracy in the rural areas. Consequent upon that, programmes managers in those stations should do more to persuade listeners to take part in all the stages of programming. Also, the government might think of leasing the ownership and control of these stations to their host communities gradually in years to come, so as to make them fully fledged community broadcast outfits, controlled and managed by the communities themselves.

A REVIEW ON ACETAMINOPHEN TOXICITY, THE JOURNEY SO FAR

HARUNA

Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero. P.M.B.1144, Aliero, Kebbi State.

ABSTRACT

Acetaminophen being one of the commonest drugs taken over the counter may be doing more harm than good to its beneficiaries. It is actually used to relieve mild to moderate pain from headaches, muscle aches, menstrual periods, colds and sore throats, toothaches, backaches, and reactions to vaccinations, and to reduce fever. Acetaminophen may also be used to relieve the pain of osteoarthritis. However, studies have shown that, excessive use or overdose of the analgesic drug paracetamol (called acetaminophen in North America) leads to toxicities. Mainly causing liver injury, paracetamol toxicity is one of the most common causes of poisoning worldwide. This study found that, in the United States and the United Kingdom it is the most common cause of acute liver failure. Thus, this paper review focuses on the hepatotoxicity, (damage to the liver) of paracetamol which results not from the drug itself, but from one of its metabolites; N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine (NAPQI) (also known as N-acetylimidoquinone). NAPQI depletes the liver’s natural antioxidant glutathione and directly damages cells in the liver, leading to liver failure. It has been reported that following a therapeutic dose, it is mostly converted to nontoxic metabolites via Phase II metabolism by conjugation with sulfate and glucuronide, with a small portion being oxidized via the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. Cytochromes P450 2E1 and 3A4 convert approximately 5% of paracetamol to a highly reactive intermediary metabolite, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine (NAPQI). which under normal conditions, is detoxified by conjugation with glutathione to form cysteine and mercapturic acid conjugates, but in cases of paracetamol overdose (due to alcoholism and unconscious intake of drugs containing acetaminophen), the sulfate and glucuronide pathways become saturated, and more paracetamol is shunted to the cytochrome P450 system to produce the toxic intermediate NAPQI. As a result, hepatocellular supplies of glutathione become depleted, as the demand for glutathione is higher than its regeneration. NAPQI therefore remains in its toxic form in the liver and reacts with cellular membrane molecules, resulting in widespread hepatocyte damage and death, leading to acute hepatic necrosis. Based on these findings, the strategies for reducing harm done by acetaminophen overdoses is first by increasing awareness and also selling paracetamol pre-combined in tablets either with an emetic or an antidote e.g. Calcitriol, Paradote and L-5-oxo-pyrrolidine-2-paracetamol carboxylate etc.

EFFECT OF HEAT TREATMENT ON FATIGUE STRENGTH OF HIGH CARBON STEEL

APASI, H.I. YUSUF AND AS. ALIYU

Department of Mechanical Engineering Kaduna Polytechnic. P.M.B 2021, Kaduna

ABSTRACT

This work presents the investigation of the effect of heat treatment options on fatigue strength of high carbon steel for various engineering applications. The investigation commenced with the preparation of work samples which were subjected to annealing, normalizing, and hardening (quenching) operations prior to fatigue testing. The experimental results show that the annealed specimen had the largest number of cycles to failure, indicating a high fatigue resistance and also recorded the high tensile strength of 1968 MPa followed by the normalized work piece samples having 1033 MPa. The microstructure of the heat treated samples and the as-received (untreated samples) were examined.   The results obtained also show that the annealed specimen (with optimum fatigue resistance) shows a large grains size of pearlite which was distributed across the entire surface of the microstructure, implying that the size and distribution of the specimens grains structure affect the resistance of  high carbon steel to fatigue life.
